Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, so its blood level reflects your real reserves. A low level is the earliest sign of iron deficiency, even while haemoglobin is still normal.
Hair loss, tiredness and poor concentration are common signs of low stores. Ferritin can rise temporarily with inflammation, so doctors read it with the CBC and CRP.
Preparation before the test
- Best done in the morning.
- Stop iron tablets 24 hours before if your doctor agrees.
