The kidneys clear waste products such as creatinine and urea from the blood. High levels mean the kidneys are not filtering well.
The lab calculates the filtration rate (eGFR) from creatinine, age and sex — the best measure of kidney function. People with high blood pressure or diabetes should test at least yearly.
Preparation before the test
- No fasting needed; it can be done any time.
- Avoid a large meat meal the day before.
- Drink water before the test so the vein is easy to find.
