Uric acid is made when purines — found in red meat, liver and seafood — are broken down. Too much can deposit in joints (especially the big toe) and cause gout attacks.
Less meat and sugary drinks and plenty of water help; your doctor decides if treatment is needed.
Preparation before the test
- Fast at least 8 hours (water only).
- Cut down on meat and liver for two days before.
