Prolactin is a pituitary hormone that drives breast milk after childbirth. A high level outside breastfeeding can upset periods, delay pregnancy or cause nipple discharge.
Stress, exercise, poor sleep and some medicines raise it temporarily, so preparation matters.
Preparation before the test
- Give the sample 2–3 hours after waking up.
- Rest 20 minutes before the sample and avoid exercise.
- Tell your doctor about antidepressants or stomach medicines.
